Background of the study

Digital language in Nigeria has rapidly evolved under the influence of social media, particularly on platforms such as Facebook and WhatsApp. These platforms serve as vital spaces where users negotiate meaning through innovative expressions that blend traditional linguistic structures with emergent digital lexicons. Facebook, with its extended posts and public discourse, encourages elaborate narratives and the incorporation of multimedia elements, whereas WhatsApp fosters intimate, real time communication with a tendency for brevity and informal language. This comparative study seeks to explore how the different affordances of these platforms drive distinct linguistic practices among Nigerian users. Evidence suggests that users on Facebook often adopt a more standardized language modified by creative neologisms and local slang, while WhatsApp interactions reveal a more spontaneous, code mixed, and context dependent language (Adeola, 2023; Nwankwo, 2024). The evolution of digital language is not only a reflection of technological adaptation but also a mirror to cultural and social transformations within Nigerian society. By analyzing textual data from these platforms, the study aims to identify patterns in vocabulary, syntax, and pragmatic markers that reveal how digital discourse is reshaping traditional language norms (Emeka, 2025). The investigation will further assess the role of network dynamics, user demographics, and communication purpose in influencing these linguistic trends, thereby offering a comprehensive picture of digital language evolution in Nigeria.

Statement of the problem

Despite growing research on digital communication, there is insufficient empirical analysis comparing linguistic practices on Facebook and WhatsApp within the Nigerian context. Existing studies tend to generalize online language change without accounting for the distinct communicative environments of these platforms. This oversight creates a gap in understanding how platform-specific features—such as message length, audience size, and privacy—affect language usage and evolution. Educators and policymakers require a nuanced understanding of these dynamics to develop informed language planning strategies, yet current models fail to capture the complexities of digital language variation in Nigeria (Ibrahim, 2023). Consequently, a comparative analysis is needed to delineate the specific linguistic innovations and deviations present on each platform, thereby contributing to both theoretical frameworks and practical applications in digital communication studies (Obi, 2024).

Objectives of the study

1. To examine the linguistic features unique to Facebook and WhatsApp in Nigerian digital discourse.

2. To compare the influence of platform design on language evolution.

3. To provide recommendations for integrating digital language trends into educational curricula.

Research questions

1. How do Facebook and WhatsApp differ in their impact on Nigerian digital language?

2. What are the key linguistic innovations evident on each platform?

3. How can these findings inform language policy and education?

Significance of the study

This study is significant as it provides a comparative analysis of digital language practices on Facebook and WhatsApp in Nigeria. By revealing platform specific linguistic innovations, the research enhances our understanding of how digital communication shapes language evolution. The findings will contribute to sociolinguistic theory and inform educators and policymakers on adapting language curricula to reflect modern digital trends, ultimately supporting effective communication strategies in a rapidly evolving digital landscape (Adeola, 2023; Emeka, 2025).

Scope and limitations of the study

The study is limited to analyzing digital language on Facebook and WhatsApp among Nigerian users, excluding other platforms and offline language practices.

Definitions of terms

• Digital Language: Language practices that emerge from online communication platforms.

• Comparative Analysis: The systematic comparison of linguistic features across different platforms.

• Neologism: A newly coined word or expression emerging in digital discourse.
